North Northamptonshire Council adopted its Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Corby following consultation in 2022/23. The £8.59 million Corby Town Centre to Train Station Link, funded through the Towns Fund, was officially opened in 2025, delivering around 1.8 km of new or improved cycle paths and 5.5 km of pedestrian paths, plus subway infill on Oakley Road.
This plan extends the existing LCWIP rather than replacing it, with particular focus on the Pen Green and Flinders Close bridges as gateway crossings.
7.1 Targets
| Indicator | Target | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| New segregated cycleway | 30 km | Additional to the 1.8 km already delivered |
| Upgraded shared paths | 20 km | Resurfaced, lit, and signed |
| Cycle parking spaces | +2,000 | At schools, station, employment, town centre |
| Modal share by bike (work trips) | 10% | Up from current low single figures |
| Modal share by walking (work trips) | 20% | Up from current ~12% |
| School Streets schemes | 12 | Time-limited closures around primary schools |
7.2 Strategic active travel routes
- Town Centre to Willowbrook East Industrial route via the Pen Green Bridge: the priority active travel scheme in this plan, opening up safe access to thousands of jobs.
- Stanion link via Flinders Close: upgrade of the existing footbridge to a fully accessible cycle and pedestrian crossing, unlocking safe non-car commuting between the southern estates and Little Stanion. Little Stanion Parish Council to be a named consultee on the Stanion-end design.
- Weldon to town centre greenway along Weldon Road.
- Rockingham Road corridor: improved lighting (addressing existing LCWIP feedback) plus segregated provision, extending into Rockingham village.
- Oakley Vale to Tresham College and Corby station, closing existing gaps.
- Country park loop linking East Carlton Park, Rockingham Forest, and the green wedges.
7.3 What Corby will press for
- A public Active Travel Tracker showing the status of every route, reported through Infrastructure Watch.
- Annual walking and cycling audits, neighbourhood by neighbourhood.
- A Bike Library at the Cube or another community venue.
- School Streets in partnership with the relevant primary schools.
- Tree planting along active travel routes.
- Joint working through the Joint Infrastructure Forum with Weldon, Stanion, Little Stanion, and Rockingham parish councils on the Weldon greenway, the Stanion link, and the Rockingham Road corridor.
