North Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats have condemned the Green Party’s decision to make “Zionism is racism” party policy, and are publicly asking Kettering’s Green councillors to condemn it.

On the 4th October 2026, at their conference in Brighton, Green Party members voted 1,022 to 813 for a motion that declares the Greens an “anti-Zionist party” by explicitly saying that Zionism, the belief for a Jewish homeland, will be “treated as any other form of racism”, and backs a single state across all of historic Palestine. The chaos continued as the proposed clause to protect Jewish members linked to Zionist synagogues or groups was voted down and four of the party’s five MPs publicly rejected the motion.

Alex Lock, Secretary of North Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats, said: “Every people has the right to decide its own future: Ukrainians, Palestinians and Israelis alike. That is the line we hold, and we hold it without compromising on human rights.

“Criticising the Israeli government is not antisemitic, and we do it. We pushed for the UK to recognise Palestine in September 2025. We called for sanctions on Israeli Ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich back in June 2025. And overall, we want an end to UK arms sales to Israel as they continue to disregard Palestinian human rights."

“However, declaring that the idea of a Jewish homeland is itself racism is something else entirely and inherently Antisemitic. It tells Jewish people living in Kettering and across North Northamptonshire that a belief many of them hold about their own identity is to be treated as racism.”

“The Greens won nineteen of the twenty seats on Kettering Town Council last year. Kettering’s residents deserve to know whether their Green councillors back their party’s new policy. We are asking them to say so, one way or the other.”

Antisemitism and anti-Palestinian racism are both real in Britain today, and both have to be called out. The Liberal Democrats back a Palestinian state alongside a secure Israel, an end to UK arms sales to Israel, and the seizure of Putin’s frozen assets to support Ukraine.

Alex added: “If you voted Green because you care about the planet, human rights and Palestine, there is a home for you with the Liberal Democrats. We are pushing for environmental change like making Pen Green a Green space, and our manifesto commits us to taking the climate emergency seriously including aiming to get the council to net zero long before 2050.”
